It depends. Are you talking at the primary level or secondary?

At the primary level, I feel that the "special" classes are necessary in order to develop various skills. And, with the obesity problem that our youth are experiencing, physical education does a world of good! (That may very well be all the physical activity some of the kids get!)

At the secondary level, I feel that the classes should be electives and not so much emphasis on them. I took music and art. I loved it. But part of being at the secondary level is to begin to make choices for yourself in your life. Offering these classes as an elective would allow those who want to take them to do so.

No -- schools should still put more emphasis on the basics (3 Rs) -- which is not to say that music, PE, and arts should not be included at all. But the emphasis should be on the basics, which are critical building blocks for future quality of life or for future study.

I agree. A person exposed to culture (art, music) learns better and faster (studies have been conducted proving this) Physical education increases learning by improving breathing and posture (both critical to the learning process) not to mention the health benefits from it.

Sounds, in principal, like a good idea. Would there be enough time in the day to do that without jeopardizing the 3 Rs?

I agree with you. Because children need entertainment when the learn something. Entertaining learning help and boost the speed of the children’s learning, listening and speaking ability. Also these help to broadening mind and give mental satisfaction.
