What KIND to buy?? Well you don't usualy need more than 1GB unless your PC is on all day. Or you are a heavy duty gamer :). To find out how mcuh you can fit you have to open up your PC and check how many empty slots you have.

From reading this question and seeing the suggestions below it...I noticed one thing---> none of them answer the question.
The best way to know HOW MUCH MORE you can install is to look at the specifications of THAT particular type of computer. For example...If you had a Dell 6800 XT computer, you would be able to have a Maximum of 2Gigabytes of RAM.
Yeah, you can go to PNY or CRUCIAL and get the RAM but you should do your homework first and figure out what MAKE and MODEL your computer is. Then you wont risk the chances of making mistakes. Good Luck!

You are in luck. There is a cute new program that tells YOU what you have on your PC and what type of RAM you have to specify when you buy more RAM.
Here it is :
www.crucial.com/systemscanner
When this comes up, they will ask you if you will permit your PC to be scanned. Do so, it is safe.
Allow the exe file to be executed (you can delete it later with one click) and when it comes up you will see what type of RAM you already have and what type you need.
Tell you friends about crucial.com as RAM is one of the most complex things to buy. There are dozens of types with many variations of pins and fittings.

desktop or laptop???
google ur computer online, you need to find the specifications, in that data sheet it will tell you exactly how much (GB) your PC can hold and how fast (eg. DDR 5200), and how many slots (eg. 2 slots). this is the only true way to know...
search the net, pricegrabber.com, tigerdirect.com, newegg.com have been good to me. even shopping.yahoo.com...

Go to http://www.crucial.com and either put in your computer or motherboard model, or use the "Scan My System" button.
