I mean, I need the money desperately. But let's face it, an internship with The Onion is big time. But the bottom line is I'm not sure that I can afford it.

you don't know that "the onion" will like you anyway.
besides, how can you be so sure that an internship with the onion is big time?
have the paying job for a while until you can afford an internship with the onion.

I'd happily live for a short while on ramen and scamming off my parents, if it meant I could work on The Onion. You'\re unlikely to get a better opportunity than that in the near future... so I say go for it.
