Ya, my boyfriend says that our world might just collapse.. but then again everyone was freaking out in the yr 2000. It's just scary that the Mayan predicted that far ahead. Isn't the sun or something going to be in the center of the galaxy? ? ?

Ok...I will try to explain on what your bf is referring to...
Scholars/scientists have known for decades that the 13-baktun cycle of the Mayan "Long count" system of timekeeping was to set to end precisely on a winter solstice, and that this system was put into place some 2300 yrs. ago. The Mayan skywatchers were able to pinpoint a winter solstice far off into the future. Now the question is..Why did the Mayans choose the year 2012 for the end of the world?..When you think about this..it does make you wonder and leaves you with the impression that there is a mystery (a very large one) to be confronted with. Makes me wonder what the scholars know that we don't.
There has been a book written by a Linda Schele that explains the Mayan calendar and what she has found through her research. She tries to explain about a Mayan Sacred Tree that has a sole purpose for this mystery, you might want to go to your library and ck out her book. It sounds quite interesting. She has stated in her book that this Mayan sacred tree is found to be none other than the crossing point of the ecliptic, with the band of the Milky Way. The Milky Way seemed to play a very important role in the Mayans imagery. If you want to know more on this topic, there is a real good website to visit that explains down to the detail about the Mayan Calendar and what it represents. I know this wasn't much but if you read what is states on this particular website you might understand it better. Have a good day!

For some odd reason, the Mayans were tracking events in the sky that seemed to occur only on the Winter Solstice. They stopped counting when they reached the calendar year 2012 because of something they predicted, that would effect our planet.
Apparently, the sun will have a close conjunction with the constellation Sagitarius (which is considered to be on the universal equator). This also coincides with their belief in something called the Sacred Tree. They predicted that when this occurs, that it will have some negative efect on the "energy weather" of earth.
Whats scary about this is that these people could calculate this event 2300 years ago. And its pretty much accurate. The only unknown is "will the earth be effected by this". We will just have to wait and see.
See the link below for more detailed info. Cheers!

well, it is not just the mayans, it is in the chinese long count, the black feet indians, the egytians, and they all have one thing in common, the calender ends. I have 2 views on this, one being that we all die in some sort of tragic event, or that the way the people who made these calanders made it by the star patterns and maped out the skys. I personaly think that 2012 is not going to happen. When I first heard about it, I freaked and started asking questions like you are now. I read alot about it on the internet and trust me your life will be much easier and happier if you just dont think about it. By thinking about it everyday you waste away your life, think about it this way, if you knew the day you were going to die, you would think about it every waking minute. So just go with the flow and live life like there is no tomorrow, cuz someday there wont be and I feel it will be alot better if we dont know.

And do you really believe that the Mayans could see into the future? Their counting system just ran out of numbers.

Not even the right hand of God knows when the end will come. Live every day as if it were your last, it just could be. I would be more concerned about that galaxy of ours!!!

If you're going to be a worry wart, I'd be more concerned about the meteor coming close the earth in 2036.
