Wonderful question and wonderful quote. What's funny, though, is that Thomas Jefferson was talking specifically about religion when he said that (if you look at the entire quote.) All our founding fathers were traitors and dissentors to England. The last thing that formed this country was a bunch of idiots who think patriotism or religion equals what is good and true. They stood for what was in their conscience. Another of Jefferson's quotes said it would be all downhill after the revolution, and he was right. Today, America is full of peasants.

I'm really surprised at the numbers who have chosen dissent in the face of tyranny. While I would not call Bush tyrannical, I would say that he certainly has proven himself to be a liar at worst, or extremely stupid for believing in liars at best. Either way, his actions have taken the US into a war and has killed so very many innocents. And not showing dissent in that case says that those folks supporting Bush, right or wrong, are really proponents of party before country.

Protect and defend the Constitution.
I would suppose "dissent in the face of tyranny" would be the more appropriate selection, since I'm offered only two very narrow choices.

Dissent in the fact of tyranny.
.....which shouldn't be confused with dissent for its own sake or dissent for the sake of tearing down the other party, because that really is party before country.

Dissent, of course. It's the better definition of "patriotism."

dissent in the face of tyranny ... of course, as a nation, we have become fat and happy and not willing to tackle or try new ideas and set new goals.

Neither. I'm not French and I have a great country and a powerful conservative movement that wants to keep it that way.
