I'm from Europe and planning on staying for about a month IN San Antonio. I'm going to take an ESL course and change the scenery for a while. My dad is a bit concerned.......thanks to holliwood LOL
Should he be worried about me? is it really dangerous for a 19 y o to be there by her own?

I live in San Antonio. San Antonio is a wonderful city. And coincidentally I have a 19 year old daughter and she travels around the city quite safely. Like any big city you have to take normal precautions--their are weirdos in all corners of the world--but it is a laid back city and people are friendly and willing to help. If you have to pick a US city to travel to alone San Antonio is a good choice. This city is fun, there are many things to do here and the culture is fantastic. I hope your dad lets you come and have a good time!! If you need any more information contact me at alwoodromberger@yahoo.com.

If you are a bright young woman and live near the colleges or universities (we have 6 junior colleges and 5 University campuses as well as many satelites), you shouldn't have a problem. My son has lived on his own since he was 18. He is now 21 and resides downtown which is fine for a young man, but I would advise against downtown for a young woman unless you are of a superior financial means. There are wonderful ESL classes at San Antonio College. It's one of the best Jr. Colleges in the U.S. Although I would recommend living near the college, there are many nice places in Alamo Heights which is not far or Olmos Park again not far that are of a good rent fare. Or you can always have a roommate which makes things much safer. San Antonio is one of the safest cities in the world because we are a tourist and military area.

I lived in Europe for a number of years and I will tell you if you are looking for trouble it will find you just like in Europe. If you use good sense then you should have no problem. Just like in any large city there is always an element that is looking to start a bunch of crap, but that is the same all over the world. Go out but go to the places that are well in the open and do it with friends. You will think that all of the men here sound so sexy, why? because we speak with a southern/Texan accent not like the English that you would have been taught in school, don't be taken in and don't rust a man here unless you already know him. Gee, sound a little bit like your father don't I. Good luck and God bless

The most dangerous thing in San Antonio are the mosquitoes (also known as "Texas State Bird")

Just don't get a place on the East side, near the ATT Center (where the Spurs play). Any other area is perfectly safe.

The nicest condo area is North of downtown, around Broadway on Alamo Heights.

It's safe, as long as you steer clear from...

The South Side - Some people say it sucks there. So steer clear of anywhere in the south, which is Loop 13 (Military Drive, except around Lackland AFB, relatively safe).

The area about ten miles from downtown - I call this the cluster, because this area is inside I10, 35, 37/281, and 90. I've been there once, and from the looks of it, it's real ghetto.

But go to Northside (NW section of city, between I10 and I35), it is really safe.

The Riverwalk is fun, beautiful and safe during the day. Lots of other tourist attractions are available and quite safe during the day. I wouldn't advise a young girl who is unfamiliar with an area to be out alone at night. Stay where you will enjoy the evenings from the comfort of your rented space. You might even find a place on the water.

Your Dad has reason to be concerned, In todays society,no one is safe anywhere, but especially alone. The best advice I can offer is for you to be a mature woman, keeping your eyes open as to whats going on around you, never comprimise your safty by being alone in any area,or place that should you need help, someone is within hearing distance. Get some mace and put it in your purse. Today one can never be to careful. Go and be on guard. Tell Dad to offer suggestions about safety .
Good luck

You should be fine there are airforce/military bases located in the city of San Antonio and they aren't notorious for a high level of crime so you should be fine.
