It was a very important city in the slave trade - so naughty goings on are bound to be abundant when the main industry is selling people.
By the start of the nineteenth century, 40% of the world's trade was passing through Liverpool - lots of wealth means lots of poor people needed to work for the few rich people. I doubt there was much investment in housing for the poor, more on grand city buildings.
Population rose in 1840s when the Irish began arriving by the thousands due to the Great Famine. By 1851, approximately 25% of the city was Irish-born - lots of poor families struggling to get by.
During the first part of the 20th century, Liverpool was pulling in emigrants from across Europe. During World War II there were 80 air-raids on Merseyside, killing 2500 people and causing damage to almost half the homes in the metropolitan area - lots of looting and those that weren't killed struggled to find somewhere to live.....
lots of reasons, but lots of other cities are thought to be full of scoundrels! One of my good friends is a scouser, he's not a thief, but earns mega bucks as a consultant (probably about 20 times my salary) but i still warn him that he should steer clear of the tyres on my car - I don't want to come out and see my car on bricks!! Scousers love a bit of banter...... 'calm down...calm down'!

People go by what history tells them, I suppose
Just like everyone knows Australia was founded by criminals
Probably Liverpool has a history of thieves as well

It comes from when Liverpool was a major shipping port and shipbilding city. Alot of the labouforce moved to liverpool and they where very poor. Theft from the docks and shipping firms was very large and it has kept that name. Infact alot of theft still continues I just think it is now on par if not surpassed by other cities. But historical names always stick.

To me Liverpool is synonymous with the Beatles, and I didn't know they were poor, dishonest or thieving, were they?

All built round deprivation and the history of the Liverpudlian. The potato famine and the survival of the fittest.
It's in the genes....though don't tell Anne Robinson that (of the weakest link fame) she would deny that vehemently.
Still a lot of rogues if you ask me.
