Research the "ping" command. Try:
ping www.yahoo.com
NOTE: Because of the global nature of sites like Yahoo, they have multiple servers and the DNS entries resolve the name to those to spread out server loads.
You might also want to try a site like http://www.whois.com and see what they provide.
FYI - When I ping, I get the following result:
C:\>ping www.yahoo.com
