I enjoy seeing shooting stars even when I'm not watching specifically for them. They are nice to look at.

On a philosophical note, they remind us that we are zooming around the Sun along with a gazillion things (almost all of which is, luckily, much smaller than our planet) and that, despite the vastness of the solar system, we still meet the occasional wanderer. These things, usually the size of a grain of sand up to a small pebble, enter our atmosphere at very high speeds (the Perseids come in at 60 km/s -- 135,000 mph).

If the sky is clear, no bright moon, no light pollution, you can see, on average, 6 shooting stars per hour.

When Earth crosses regions known to have higher concentrations of "stuff", the count can get up to almost 100 per hour (those times are called meteor showers -- Perseids are the most popular ones, in early August each year).

As for the blanket and the lying down, I'll pass. It is still around 0 F here, and we're expecting another foot of snow tonight.

They are actually not stars as everyone knows.

They are very nice specially when you look at them. I see the sky every night. Atleast for 30 minutes in my roof. They bring me good luck the next day and calmness for the night I sleep. The shooting stars are really very attractive to look at. The disadvantage is that they come once in 15 days & also appear for a short time. It is necessary that you know about shooting stars. Otherwise they will seem to you as bullock carts move the village.

Shooting stars are a real bonus for star gazers. If you watch the sky on a dark night for half an hour you should spot several brief streaks of light. All you need is a blanket to lie and watch, a clear view of the sky an a moonless night.

I don't find much about them fascinating these days, after all that hype in the late 90s about killer asteroids. The only thing I ever pay interest in with space is the odd Barnard's Star, I like that more than any other star.

today i saw one shooting star! believe me! shooting stars are not stars but comets or meteors that we see from outer space! there is no way we can see when it is in earth because when it reaches the atmosphere it burns up because of the friction and gravitational force! but some meteors may land on the earth! while they are in space they are called meteors and when they enter the earth they are called meteorites!
