Playing a musical instrument involves the mind and body on many different levels. In interpreting the musical symbols you are deciding what the note is, how long it is, how loud it is, what style it is and how it fits into the pattern of other notes. All this is done in an instant.

Also, at the same time you are involved in counting and listening to make certain that you are playing with good sound and in tune while making certain that your fingers are going in the correct places at exactly the correct time to match the rhythms that you are reading. Simple, huh?

And that is just to play the notes! Then you have to try to make it an interesting and musically pleasing performance.

That should keep your mind sharp and busy!!!

for starters the skill required to play any instrument is a great mental exercise, you are focusing on the playing of different notes and chords, while using different playing styles and keeping time all at the same time, secon it opens up many forms of creativity in the brain, music is just as complex as learning another language or mastering calculus

It's just like any activity that stimulates the mind. It takes concentration and practice to keep your mind on its toes. The musical part of your brain grows and learns and any part of your brain growing will sharpen it in someway. If you learn theory and how to apply it to the instrument you'll find that it's all just math, so it will sharpen that part of your brain too.
