Hi - I can't get the wheel in the filter to run (i.e. turn). I cleaned everything up with water only, wet the new (blue) filter and installed it blue-side up (the only way it would fit into the unit) and now, although the unit is buzzing quietly, the wheel won't turn. It's been stored for probably about 3 or so years. Do I need to get a new wheel? A whole new filter system? Maybe is it not sucking up water (doesn't appear to be doing that - the holding area where the blue filter is sitting isn't filling up).

I never was the one who took care of the acquarium. Trying to do this for a special thing for the kids but can't get it working. Any help or tips appreciated. Thanks so much!!

If you notice a lot of hard water deposits on the wheel itself or on the sides of the wheel, you may have to get a new wheel. I know that happens to both the Emperor and Penguin biowheels after they sit in storage for a while.

Try to get into where the impeller is - it's possible that this is all gunked up and it would explain why you're not getting any water flow at all (you should be hearing the filter trying to work - sounds kinda like it's chopping at wood). If your filter is dead silent and not picking up any water, you may need to replace the motor itself. At this point, it might just be cheaper to get a whole new filter.

You can order your size online from here: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/product/advancedSearch.web?command=Search&searchParams.webCategoryKey=245&searchParams.keywords=eclipse&searchParams.size=10#resultBody

I've found that That Pet Place tends to be cheaper than most of the local stores here.

The water level in an Eclipse system with a top mount filter has to be within a quarter of an inch from the top for the filter to run correctly. If it has been stored the impeller may not be turning.

Take the filter off the tank and pull off the suction tube and look inside the motor. plug it in for a few seconds to see if the little white tabs start to move. if they do fill the tank all the way and put the filter back, plug it in and pour a little water in the filter pan to prime it and it should start right up.

If the little white tabs do not start to move you will have to disassemble the motor and clean it really well reassemble it and give it another shot. If it still wont spin after being cleaned it was probably run dry and allowed to overheat which can melt the plastic of the motor a bit and never allow it to run again. If this is the case you will have to replace the filter unit. as for the wheel just clean the posts on both sides and the little cradles they sit in on the filter and it will start spinning again in no time.

Good luck
E.

P.S. I just reread your question and these filters should make NO noise while running. If it is making sounds (buzzing) it is most likely shot and will have to be replaced. sorry.

I have never had that filter but most filters need to be primed in order to work, fill the holding area with water. Once that is filled with water and it still isn't working make sure them impeller and all other parts are working. If it still isn't working you can go to their website and I'm sure they have help on there for your type of eclipse.
