You can use a bunch of softwares, just depends on what file format your existing floor plans are in. AutoCAD is an expensive option and it takes a while to learn it if you are new to it. A fairly easy-to-use software is Google sketchUp.
This gives you a rough image of your house, and allows you to add new ideas you may have and lets you visualize them as you draw them.
If you are looking for something more fine-tuned and advanced, then you can look into Autodesk packages. For residential designs of small nature, Architectural desktop is more intuitive, but a newer way to look at the building is Revit. The other option to looking at a more advanced approach if you are a Mac user would be ArchiCAD.

DWG and DXF files can be edited with a variety of tools,
FWIW a trialware program called PROGESOFT is a CAD program you can download for free and edit autocad files.
