Mostly, just the way they chose to pronounce words differently that were picked up and carried on by their children, grand children etcetera I would think.

Australians and British accentsonly sound slightly different when you are neither Australian or British, to each of us, we share a unique accent.

Good question!

I'm not sure how or why the accent was lost.

However, if you go into the deep, deep woods of the Ozarks and the Appalachian mountain ranges those inhabitants still speak with the original colonist twang. No, I'm not talking about hillbillies, there is a segment of the population that's deeper into the ranges that are known as "ridge runners" Some Anthropologists contend that these people still speak a language closer to the early American colonists.

Very good question.
I would suppose that as the saying goes, America was, is a melting pot. Even back then the Brits weren't the only ones coming to America. Look at the Revolutionary War. You had more than the English fighting ex-English men. There were Germans, French, native Americans, Africans, and more. Not totally English from the onset.

How can you possibly know they lost their accents? Were you their, or is that just what you think? The American accent changed over time.
