I have a front wheel drive vehicle. I was asked to take the car in and get it balanced, and when I called for a price they gave me one per tire. So can I get just the front ones done?

You can have the front, all, one, any, or none, it is your choice.

Wheel balance is important on a car not just for drivability but also for durability. When the wheels are not properly balance then you may pick up an annoying vibration in the steering and ride of the vehicle.
Have you every washed clothes and the clothes washer during the spin cycle will began to bounce and move around? That is because the weight of the wet clothes is on one side and the tumbler is out of balance so under speed it moves the entire machine.
The same thing happens to your tires, there is no perfect circle, so the offset of that circle will cause the same effect as the clothes in the washer.
A 50gr offset at 100km ph will be equal to striking the rim of your tire with a 1 kilo hammer once for every rotation of the tire. These will shorten the life spans of the wheel bearings, shocks, springs, and other suspension parts. You will notice this more on the front wheels than on the back.
But the choice to balance the wheels remains with you.

If the tires have been previously balanced, there is no need.
Have someone lift up the vehicle & splin the wheels - check to see if the wheel is running true. Also check there is no a build up of mud on the in of the wheel the wheel lip.

YES IT IS ALRIGHT, ALSO IF YOUR TIRES ARE WEARING OUT FAST YOU SHOULD GET THE TRACKING LOOKED AT. IF YOUR TIRE IS WEARING AT THE EDGES YOU WILL NOTICE THE HEAVY WEAR. SO I WOULD SAY THINK OF THE TRACKING AS MORE IMPORTANT. IT WOULD MAKE YOUR TIRES LAST MUCH BETTER. IF THE TRACKING IS RIGHT.
