An au-pair gets wages in form of Pocket money. In fact the whole au-pair payments are part in nature (room and board), and part in a small monthly or weekly sum of money.

Au pairs are paid at a minimum rate of £60 per week [£65 in the London area] for up to 25 hours per week, 5 hours per day 5 days per week. Any additional hours should be paid at a minimum of £3.50 per hour - however, most of the time the work is on-and-off, according to school hours and so on.

Note that an au-pair must be an EU national (otherwise, she isn't legal and nobody will be able to control the fees paid), and under 28 years of age.
