Depends on the breed and how they're cared for. Ponies tend to live longer (anywhere from 30-45 years, if not more), whereas Drafts tend to live anywhere from 20-35 years. We had an Arabian/Saddlebred mare that was 38 when she had to be euthanized due to a fall in the pasture. The oldest horse that I can remember off the top of my head was (I believe) a Quarter Horse gelding who was in his 50s. The more you take care of a horse, the longer they're likely to live.

All depends on the horse- draft horses (large ones) usually about 25 or so. Regular horses- 30s. Ponies- they live forever. We have one that we know is over 40....I wish we had an exact date.
I believe the oldest horse on guiness records was 51yrs- a pony/arab cross.

Today, horses can live upto or even past their 30s. That is thanks to todays technilogical advances and the more we, and equine professionals know about senior equine health.
In the wild once a horse begins losing their grinding molars, they lose their ability to chew their food, and they usually starve to death, true with elephants as well.
Domesticated senior equines have their loving owners, veterinarians, and feed companies who specialize in senior nutrition to help them live a little bit longer, and in much more comfort than they did about 20 years ago. Once a domesticated senior equine loses their grinding molars they are usually switched to a mush type food ( where no mastication- chewing- is needed to ingest and properly break the food down for the GI tract to digest).
Also advances in Equine medicine plays a vital role in extending the length of a horses life.

Horse can live up to their 35-40's. Although most become lame when they reach those ages, they still make great companion horses.
