I went to Mauritius with my son in October 2006 and we both loved it. The scenery is lovely, the climate great, the food tasty and the people very friendly. We stayed at the Indian Resort Hotel in the southern most point of Mauritius in Le Morne, but I hired a small car and off we went exploring by ourselves.

If you are going on a package and all meals are included then you will be fine. If you are going half board or bed and breakfast then I would advise you to hire a car to go to local shops to bring in your own soft drinks and snacks and the hotel costs for soft drinks and alcohol in Mauritius are totally sky high.

Also make certain if you are NOT going to hire a car that you are near to local villages because we found oursleves about 40 minutes from the nearest one [walking] and to take taxis there also costs a fortune!!

So in short my advice is go to Mauritius you won't regret it, BUT either 1) Go all inclusive or full board and if you don't choose this option then hire a car to travel around or if you can't hire a car make sure you are near local towns and villages.

One final piece of advice if you are taking your credit cards contact the companies beforehand to let them know you are going to Mauritius as when I initially tried to use my Barclaycard and Mastercard in this country I soon discovered they had to be activated to be used there.

My son and I did some great things: undersea walking in Grand Baie [up North], Cable Zip Riding [really hair raising]; we went to Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth, we went to a nature reseve and saw giant tortoises, etc, went out in a glass bottomed boat, went bargain hunting in the large outdoor market at Port Louis and generally had a blast.

If you want to plan some excursions whilst you are there contact:White Sand Tours which was one of the the cheapest and most well known excursion operators in Mauritius and the pricesof the excursions were very reasonable!! They also can sort out the car rental which they did for me and it was about also cheap! They come to your hotel to sort out what you want to do and where you want to go!!

P.S YOU WILL ALSO NEED TO BUY AQUA SHOES to wear whilst swimming in the sea [you can get them cheap on Ebay] as Mauritius has the deadly stonefish in its waters..
Also take lots and lots and lots of Mosquito Repellant [something like LifeSystems Expeditions 50] as you'll get bitten to hell and really its the sensible thing to do as my son was very badly bitten in the last two days of our stay.

Enjoy yourself!!

Mauritius... Why? for its culture, its social life, its history, beaches, bazaar Port Louis where you have to taste an 'alooda' and a pair of 'dholl purri', for the Saturday shopping in Curepipe, the 'goyaves de chine', pineapples and 'jamalacs' with salt and chili... For all the table d'otes on the western coast, for the dolphins and the big fish games... For the coming Royal Raid, the wind surf, the children laughing , the girls on the beaches, the boys at the bar... For the food which is just 'oh my God!!' for the colors and the proof that God exists...

Since your question is in the Travel Section, I suppose that you hesitate between visiting Mauritius or Delhi. I have not yet travelled to Delhi but I can tell you that Mauritius is a fantastic destination for holidays.

MAURITIUS is a small island, of volcanic origin, of approximately 1865 square kilometres situated in the Indian Ocean. It is almost entirely surrounded with coral reefs, and has beautiful white sand beaches and blue lagoons; it has a central plateau and beautiful mountains, as well as botanical gardens, parks, and wonderful places worth visiting. It is approximately 2000 km from Durban (South Africa), 6000 km from Perth (Australia) and 4700 km from Bombay (India). Its population is made up of various ethnic groups, namely Indian, Chinese, Muslim, European, and Creole (people of African origin). Its a melting pot of cultures, hence different types of cuisine. There are many beach hotels all around the island, as well as others in towns.
