It's a very fast paced high stress level job only for those who are willing to be unappreciated, stiffed, and talked down to by the more common opinion of clueless people who condescendingly AND mistakenly assume servers are servers because they can't find anything better than a job requires no more of you than taking a food order. Once you accept that this opinion of a large majority of people is not only false but very ignorant as well you can more easily attract regulars who usually consist of those who understand there's much more behind the scenes of the food industry and requires insurmountable humility and integrity to work. You will find there are very few people who understand and appreciate the service that is provided them at a restaurant; however, these few are the ONLY ones who will validate that appreciation or verbal praise with a tip that well exceeds the hourly wage of 2.13 an hour. You'll know if you are successful in the restaurant service if you have many "regulars." Normally they are the only ones who tip fair enough to live off off. Sadly you have to wait on endless amounts of people who don't tip with no explanation, who tip poorly on excellent service, people who have no reservations about indulging themselves at a restaurant and just can't bring themselves to leave more than a religious tract that explains why you need Jesus. There will be others who sing praises of a job well done and leave nothing, and there will be others who lie to your face when you ask if everything is ok and if there's anything else you can get them. Lest I forget there will also be those who make it a point to be as rude and meticulously needy as possible just for shits and giggles to test you, as well as those who love to play with your emotions by joking about your tip. And some will be tables with no more than 2 who will run you back and forth as if they were a table of 20. Some of your guests will consist of parents who have absolutely NO control over their children.
These aforementioned types of people will naturally be the first kind you will wait on. So again I reiterate humility and integrity. Your regulars will undeniably make you feel appreciated in the manner that will allow you to work your job with the pride that enhances your job performances as a server. This is the best I can explain it.

The operation of bringing the goods(food, wine) and services(hot hand towels, pouring wine for the customer) of the restaurant at the convienience and desire of the customer.
Or, we grudgingly endure the customers existence and are just trying to get enough money to buy a couple beers later and try to forget we have to occupy the same planet.
Take your pick.

It would mean asking customers if everything was okay, do you need anything else, but not pestering them to death while they are trying to have a conversation and enjoy their meal.
