They have to pick a song from a list most weeks.

Generally they are limited to a group of songs and they must clear the songs they sing in advance to be sure the show has the rights to play them. That is why they may have to switch songs at the last moment as some have had to do.

in the first audition, they can sing whatever they want. then during hollywood week, they pick from a list. then the final episodes before the top 12 they can pick whatever they want. when they make the top 12 there is a new theme every week and they have to choose a song that fits the theme.

I believe so except during a showcase week like Diana Ross week or say a Rhythm and Blues theme week.

at first it's what you want to sing ..and then get's harder as they progress ... we are in the " Theam Weeks " now, and believe you me ..it will get better ..
