What do you want to do?
If you want to some extensive writing, and using many true Windows Applications, then the Laptop is the toy of choice.
But if you just want to message, email, talk, look up basic things on the internet, read news and such, the phone will be just fine. But CHECK all of these models for each provider, and make sure that you stick with the phone service provider that REALLY works best in your area of travel. Check their Coverage map.
T-mobile is truthful with their coverage map. They show the detailed signal strength of their system, so you can check EVERY location of your typical travel area. It would be nice if Verison and Cingular learned a few things about HONESTY.
Good luck
