Your enjoyment of a documentary will probably be somewhat impacted by your interest in its subject matter...but with that caveat, there are many out there that are well made enough that they can be enjoyed without much prior knowledge. Just the other night I saw "Into Great Silence," a wonderfully meditative and visual look at a Carthusian monastery with almost no talking for 2 1/2 hours! On the other end of the spectrum, "Who Gets to Call It Art" is a really engaging, non-linear look at the pop art movement in the 60's, and is quite entertaining even for those who are not pop art fans. If you are looking for something more socially relevant and uplifting, "The Heart of the Game" is a really inspirational look at a girl's basketball team and all their on and off the court drama. So there's a start - documentaries are just like any other kind of movie, with great stories and production, and not such great stories and production...so get out there and start watching so you can form your own opinions!

I'm not really much of a documentary guy, but I hear An Inconvenient Truth was good. Probably the last documentary I saw and liked was Hoop Dreams.

I agree with all the suggestions, especially Lost in lamancha, and hearts of darkness. My two favorite. But i was surprised no one mentioned "Dark Dayz". It's a documentary about the homless that lived under the streets in the old abandoned train tunnels. It's truly amazing, especially the little featurette on the making of it. Go see it. Genius.
