I can't think of many I haven't used. Car won't start, stuck in the driveway, flu, migraine, severe diarrhea, a pipe broke and my basement is flooding, flat tire and I don't know how to change it, period cramps, my dog got stung by a bee and her face is swelling up, I think I have food poisoning, allergic reaction, I fell and hurt my back and so many more. Some were true but many were lies or exaggerations cuz I didn't feel like going to work.

Never did. I am at work, even when I'm sick. I feel too guilty staying home, especially if there are things that need to get done. Usually they'll send me home early as they can see I was not well. However, years ago I suffered badly from migraines. I was an adult child still living at home - my father wasn't much for people calling in sick. But one day I had such a bad headache, he could see it that he grabbed the phone and called in himself to say I wasn't going to be in for work as I was suffering from a migraine. (Was an assistant manager for a salon, my manager always called in sick, I always covered for her - but she was pissed off when I tried to do it - and really was sick). I guess dad just got sick and tired of hearing how awful she was and decided to step and take care of it himself. Shortly thereafter, she was asked to resign. Amazingly, truthfully my migraines got better after that.

I think anything children-related works great. Most - if not a lot - of people have kids and even the boss has to concede to the occasional sick kid/school staff development day/inclement weather excuse with no questions asked.

Working sick occasionally helps, especially if you say, "Cough-cough. Can't...go...home. Must...save..sick days for the...cough-cough...kids"
