It's not taught in any real way in the UK either... but we have 'religious education', which teaches us the various basic beliefs of certain main religions, and is a complete waste of time and energy, though never anything in depth, and we never have to read their various religious texts.
I don't remember the last time a religious topic was dealt with in any way by a book we had to read in English classes... and the only books I've read that did touch on more than a small bit of religion were the da Vinci code (Christian idea of religion), and the Eygpt series by Wilbur Smith (Ancient Eygptian idea of religion).

In the UK unless you were at a religious school, you would be taught in religious education only about religion. This would cover all main religions. The school would contain Christians, Atheists, Hindus, Muslims, Skihs etc... as well as smaller groups like Jehovahs Witnesses. You are taught the main features and beliefs of each religion.
As a result, should a religious problem arise in literature, the class is better equiped to deal with it. The literature will have different cultural bases anyway so it wouldn't necessarily be a bible reference. I don't recall any religious issues in books I read at school, Shakespeare, Austen etc...

Generally it is not acceptable to teach the Bible as part of literature in the US, for instance, for various reasons. First, it requires teachers to be in a very delicate position, in order to teach it as literature. For one, they have to be committed to teaching it as literature and not as their beliefs. People who are Christian sometimes get very angry if the book is taught as literature and not dogma, and people of other or no religion get angry that the book is treated preferentially.
I went to a secular private school where we were taught some of the Bible in English class, as literature, along with Greek and Roman mythology. The political and cultural climate in the US means that this is near impossible in public schools.

We don't teach the bible in the public school system in Canada. Bible teachings do not belong in the school system(my opinion) due to the diverse populations. "Religions" should be a subject taught in the high school system where students can learn about the different sects around the world should they choose too.

The reason we don't study the bible in school is because we aren't religious cellists that pray 5 times a day and strap bombs on our self an blow things up. Any extreme is bad. As for literature, They don't teach much of it any more since every school kid is to lazy to read.

I don't know what country you are from, but they don't teach religion in the government schools here in the U.S.A. Religion may be discussed if it pertains to a piece of literature, but it may not be taught. Here we thankfully have freedom of religion and freedom from religion.

with assistance from wearing and preaching the call of the actual God Jehovah, we've set ourselves except for the church homes of the international. they have a God of puzzle who won't be able to be understood. This shows they forget Bible assistance. Isaiah fifty 5:6 says to seek Jehovah even as He should be got here across. in person-friendly words with assistance from understanding and coming up a personal courting do all of us be conscious of Him.

The Bible was taken out of school along time ago where I am from and my cousin and best friend are teachers and they have to tip toe around moral subjects because moral subjects are addressed in the Bible. Also the New Pepsi soft drink cans that are coming out have taken God out of the pledge of alligance(?) that is printed on the can
