We will never give up. The American dream includes frequent trips to the dentist. The English should take a cue from that.
Hey, If we are going to generalize and berate, my answer fits the question.

Actually deary,
1. Most of us are living the dream. Granted it may not be your idea of a good dream, but we love it none the less.
2. The US has a huge majority of vegetarians, and the amount of overweight is significantly smaller than the amt. of underweight with eating disorders. But you'd have to turn off the phony news channels to see that.
3. Again see reference to dream
4. We have the right to bear arms, if you do not agree with us...easy, don't break into our homes and we won't shoot you.
As for the Friendly fire, you need to recheck your stats and you will see friendly fire goes both ways. Maybe if your country allowed you to have guns you'd have better aims.
But as you are an Englishman, we will excuse you this time.
There is an old Irish joke, 2 Irish men were sitting in a bar and an Englishman walks up to them and steals the first mans drink. Then says "I'm English and Your St. Patty was a Sissy", So the Irish man looks at him and says so what he was also English! The 2nd Irish man says "thats alright Sonny we'll excuse you, we understand you are only English"

I am not an American nor British.
But I will like to say that it is that America become the world's only superpower now because they have the American Dream. In less than 300 years since USA was founded, they became the top nation in the world, made countless inventions that benefited the world and help to maintain a world that is relatively at peace. All that is possible because many Americans believe in the American Dream.
Yes, USA has its flaws too, (loud Americans, decadent behaviour, drugs, guns etc) but which country do not have the similar or worse problems?
As to the British, your empire has crumbled half a century ago. But still, you have good points that others should learn too. If you can starting writing about them instead of criticising others, then you will win more friends. Need me to help you write about the good points of the British ?

Why do you always let us know you are an Englishman? My mother's ancestors arrived in America from England in 1640 and my father's arrived in the late 1670's. We all achieved the American dream since that time while being allowed to enjoy religious freedom. I love visiting England but feel no need to include by English ancestry in every Q & A.
I'm not sure what your definition is of the American dream, but I can guarantee it is wrong.
The only people giving up on the American dream are the hippies who found out that they can sit back and enjoy liberal politicians' social entitlements.

Nobody should ever, give up on their *dreams*
For to do so,
means, to give up all hope, for a good future ..
We all have dreams , some impossible to attain ,
but they are, what makes us look to the future,
and not back !
Don't give up being you ,
Strive ahead with your *dreams* held close
We too have *dreams, of longing *
Here in England ,
they are very close to your American *dream*
sweet dreams blow away the nightmares .
let the peace of the good times return soon .

The American Dream is alive and well thank you very much. As long as we as Americans see it working for some people we will strive to acheive it also. McNo! The American people are truly horrified and saddened by the loss of UK soldiers in the war.
As an American it always amazes me that people from the UK are always putting us down when we usually treat you with decency and respect (as much as possible on this forum).

Americans do not reach the American dream because it is a fluid concept. If you reach your goals, you move them higher. Quite simply, the American dream is a belief that if you work hard, follow the rules and have a bit of luck you can be better off than your parents were. You can provide a decent life for a family through home ownership, civic participation and education. You children will then have a better life than you and can move one step up on the social scale.
There are millions of Americans who are living this dream every day. If we give up on that we may as well move to Great Britain.
P.S. Yes responsible gun ownership may be a part of that dream. It is our right.

1. Many reach the American dream, but how they define that dream is up to the inidividual.
2. Uhm, no, it doesn't. But, thanks for the stereotype.
3. Says you.
4. I don't own a gun, so I wouldn't know.

1) We are hanging onto the dream knowing NOW it WAS only a dream
2) NO but it does include a lifetime supply of obeseness
3) I would have to consult a lawyer for the legalities on the dream turned nightmare.
4) depends on if you are lib or conservative. BUT I wouldn't call the shoot out at the Trolley mall last month friendly fire; but a good example of why good citizens should not be at the mercy of the bad guys who can get guns while they are illegal for the good guys.

When the chinese dream is bigger than theirs.
It has been taken over by the 'big american paranioa' that the world is out to get them, which they are with a list of reason to get the US as long as you arm.
I sense that a few people from the US still believe the big dream, the right to bear arms, NRA and so on...
The American dream should read, look after the top 10% of the country, do not worry if it is at the cost of the majority of the population, the rest of world or the environment. If that is your dream go for it and be proud.
The US economy could so easily fall into a recession, sadly europe will follow because financial markets are linked. This coupled with the demise of the big middle east oil dream, will see the emergance of the Far East Dream, which will last for a century of 2.
