A bigot in this sense means that you are prejudiced against other races. Your friend's husband was continuing a decades old religious hatred by assuming that as a Protestant you are personally responsible for bad treatment of Catholics.

You are not a bigot clearly, as you have Catholic friends! It is your friend's husband who is bigoted, for making assumptions about you based on your religion.

what a berk!! people like him are the cause of all the intolerance in the world...so what if they are catholic and you are protestant...what matters is that you treat each other with respect and don't make religion a big deal...it's a personal thing anyway so why it should have any impact on who makes up your friends......oooohhhhh don't get me started!!

A bigot is someone who holds strong views, for what ever reason, even if it offends others, so he's the one thats being bigoted. Don't mind him

It means prejudice against something, whether race, religon, sexuality, whatever.

I personally would be mad if someone called me that.
