I have always felt that there are different levels of respect:

Respect for each other as people (humans) should always be a given.

Respect for leaders (Political, teachers, religious etc) should have an automatic bit of respect for the position they have attained but any other respect beyond that has to be earned.

I'll give you an example - I have respect for George W. Bush as he is the President of the United States. But I do not respect his policies on the Iraq War and other things.

Respect is not an on off switch. It comes in layers. I have a base amount of respect for everybody. There are some by their actions that will raise the amount I have for them, and others will lower it. But respect is not 100% or 0%, on off. It is a complex issue.

I think that the concept of "respect" is in our genes. Anyone has my respect until they give me a reason to lose that respect for them. There are many cultures that try to teach respect but end up teaching passiveness instead.

earn it usually.
but occasionly i will meet someone with a great aura and just i have general interest in them (which doesnt happen often) and they can have my respect for free at first, but if they screw up they have to earn it 10 times over to get a small amount of respect
