There are a lot of different exercises you can do to increase your vertical jump. Jumping rope is a good one. Running up stairs is better. So is the exercise where you jump onto and then off of a sturdy box from various angles. The point of these exercises are to build the fast-twitch muscles in your legs.

Traditional heavy weight exercises like squats, however, don't work as well since they train your slow twitch muscles. If you were a running back and a linebacker jumped on you, then squats would help you out. Not so much for dunking. However, you will find that either type of leg workout will improve your ability to perform the other type.

Also, those funny shoes you see in magazine ads that promise to make you jump higher? They work and can add at least around 4-6" to your vertical.

You train to jump better. Do calf raises, squats, and lunges. Before do all that, you have to have good core strength to back it all up. Sit ups or lower back raises can help you with that.

Get leg weights of several different sizes (weight), start jump roping with the lightest weight and work your way up with the weights.
