I gave my Aunt my old computer, but she wanted to keep her monitor, which is from the mid 90's, because it is smaller. However she says that the computer constantly freezes up. I took the computer home to try to fix it, and it worked perfectly. Is the cause of this the monitor, or am I overlooking something?

This computer is NOT hooked up to the Internet.

She is also using her old keyboard and mouse, if that would make a difference.

They are interchangeable...why it freezes up, I'm not sure...but I'm 98% sure it wouldn't be because of the monitor.

Tell her to stop downloading porn! It's full of virus' and spyware!

As you said that the system worked at your home, definately there is something wrong at your aunts home.

First of all you have to trace the problem, Check Windows event viewer in the admin tools in control panel. Check if it states any error in all the three categories related to the freez.

Most probably if will not, so its a hardware problem.

Now check whether the cable connecting the monitor and the cpu are not loose any way.

Secondaly check how the cpu get power at your aunts home. Check whether proper earthing is provided and there should be not loose electrical wires.

You only mentioned that you are used the old monitor, well if you are using any of the other component there can be compatibility problems at the hardware level which most of the time results in a system freez.

It is very possible her old monitor is incompatible with the newer computer. We just replaced our tower and had this happen. The monitor is still good but not able to handle that newer programing.

You can also run into this same problem with your mouse or keyboard. Just ask anyone that has "upgraded" to Windows Vista. Most older programs wont work with Vista.

I think the problem is the user, not the monitor. When you changed the user, the computer worked perfectly. If the monitor were the problem, the computer would not even start.

No, they all work fine.Wait and see if it does freeze up and if it does, it probably is not the monitor, but some program or file that has caused the problem. Just reboot.

it could be possible that the monitor is not compatible to the new computer. maybe the quality of the new computer is too advanced for the older monitor. you should ask the geek squad!

Might need to install drivers for the old monitor to work properly.

As long as the old monitor has the correct VGA connection, it should work fine.
