I like to try and help answer questions on YAHOO! Answers while my day is slow at work and I am amazed at the amount of people who can not spell words even close to the actual spellings. I know that there are a majority of school age users on this site and I am shocked that schools must have stopped teaching spelling and grammar to students.

I know what you mean! I think they don't click on the Spell Check because they are too lazy and simply don't care.

My son is in 6th grade. He isn't a terrific speller but I have to teach him at home because they don't at school. He does have one spelling test a week of only 15 words. And I think the words the 6th graders are given are 4th grade level. And when I look over work that is already graded that he brings home, he will have mistakes that the teachers don't mark wrong. Spelling mistakes, punctuation mistakes, capitalization mistakes. I've asked one teacher why are these wrong and I was told that because of the "no child left behind act" was put in place the teachers were told to just make sure the students know the matter that you are covering and don't have the students stress over every little thing. They just need to concentrate on the subject itself and eventually they will learn the rest. This actually sickens me. So without proper grammar being taught in schools and with all the computer lingo (lol, cul8r, u,..) children are stupid. I am always correcting my son and his friends. I know it drives them nuts but their incorrect grammar drives me nuts! Honestly, the "no child left behind act" is making it worse for our children's future.

It is so irritating. I go to a private school, and yes they do still teach grammar and spelling. I don't know about other schools, but at least the academy I go to still teaches these subjects. Does it really take any extra effort to push a little button that says Check Spelling? It makes you look educated and civilized if you do. Well, keep encouraging good spelling habits!
(see, I just clicked Check Spelling, and there were no misspellings! Wow, what do ya' know! Huh!(- just had to put it to get a little bit on your nerves for fun!)

It is the internet age. Sad to say, but uneducated people think proper spelling is that of acronyms or "teh", "hawt", or "whuteva". And after a while, that carries over to everyday life and really speeds up the process of stupidity and everyday habits. Or, possibly, they may find it too verbose and eccentric within their esoteric groups of dumbed down individuals to actually show their educated sides and intelligence quotient. After all, who needs education, guidance, and to find out common information by either adults, books, or other means of information outside the world wide web? Thing is, and I find really sad, is that a lot of the typos and errors made are not just school age users alone. Many are actually adults as well, which it makes it all the more scarier. Mainly if they are successful in fornicating and breed from it and allowing their genes to enter the world. It seems education has been turned off and replaced by television and internet, which we all know, is the most "valuable" piece of information we have at our disposal. Encyclopedias? Who needs those anymore?

1.Internet chat, requiring quick response, necessitating abbreviations that are coined on the spot or copied from others, not necessarily correctly.
2.SMS- same as 1.
3. Inadequate effort put in at school to learn correct spelling and possibly inability of teachers themselves to correct errors due to general decline in English education standards that gets carried over to teacher level. (No offense meant to good teachers who may have become frustrated due to overall apathy of students.)
4. Parents themselves not in a position to help children improve spelling skills, either due to ignorance or lack of time.

These could be some of the reasons for the miserable spelling which we come across in YA.
As for non-use of spell check provided by YA, this question has been asked several times and gets repeated from different people who pose the same question.
Unless YA makes it compulsory for all questions and answers to go through a spell check before it gets into the question and answer list, this situation is unlikely to improve. Even this compulsory requirement, if introduced, could only marginally improve the quality of spelling, as people could go through the motions of a spell check use without bothering to correct the errors pointed out.
It ultimately boils down to active involvement of all participants to improve themselves!

I don't know but it drives me nuts too!

Sometimes the spelling and grammar is so bad that you can't even understand what they are asking.

I've also wondered why people ask certain questions on here when they could just look them up online or in a dictionary.

Laziness, I guess.

^^^ Oh my goodness, Gene, I am SO with you on that!

Loose vs. lose is probably my biggest pet peeve. More than 50% of the people on here seem to get that wrong. I just wonder how they think loose is spelled, if they think lose is spelled l-o-o-s-e. It really gets on my nerves!

Because, not only can they NOT spell...
they can NOT read either (e.g. the words "Check Spelling")

While on the subject...
have you noticed how many of these illiterate idiots keep misspelling "lose" and are using "loose" instead?
(e.g. "How can I loose 10 pounds")
This is making me visibly upset.
