I'm a Graphic designer/illustrator by trade but also get to dabble in animation via flash and 3dstudio.

I think if you have a strong grounding in one dicipline then go for it - or if you are split between the two then go for graphic design.

I love it, i get numerous briefs to fulfill each week - very tight deadlines, but the feedback is always amazing.

it depends on what kind of animation you're talking about. IF you're looking to work at pixar, you better be damn good. Same with anything like saturday morning cartoons. it's an elite field. You also mush have the patience of a saint.

If you mean flash animation for websites, or flash applications, then you're in luck. Go to school for that, (and do well), and you will easily find a job.

Graphic design is my passion. Unfortunately, it's getting more competitive to get a job right out of school. I think it's a great, and rewarding career choice, as it's one of the few fields that you can have somewhat (emphasis on the somewhat) artistic expression, and can exercise creativity. If you choose this route, I would reccomend a school that either emphasises engineering and design, or an art school over a state school or private U that has a graphic design program. If you're really good, look into Pratt, SVA, or RISD (all east coast)

My wife's step-brother and his wife are both animators. Both went to school and started out as graphic artists. Both REALLY love their work. The benefits of one over the other? From what little I actually know of the subject, graphic artists have greater opportunity for employment, but are essentially a dime a dozen. Animators have less opportunity for employment, but make a whole heck of a lot more when they are gainfully employed.
