Today is my hubby's birthday and I wanted to surprise him w/ news that I'm pregnant (I don't know for sure but feel strongly that I am). We've been trying but it's too soon for a home pregnancy test to show it. I have a 28 day cycle and ovulated on the 10th (last Saturday). I read somewhere that a blood test would pick it up around a week after so I made an apt w/ my doctor to have a blood test done (yesterday). I went in and his nurse told me to go ahead and go to the lab first. I did, where the lady handed me a cup. I told her I requested a "blood" test and that I could do that at home. She went to ask my doctor and his reply was, "it's just as accurate" and told her to tell me, if I had a problem to go talk to him.
I just got (very) frustrated and left.
I know they are both accurate (which is what I told the lady) but I thought the blood would show it sooner. Am I wrong??
Also, I never saw the doctor but paid my $20 co-pay- for nothing. Should I just wait to see if he actually bills me & my insurance company for the office visit? If so, should I call my insurance company and tell them not to pay it? Should I ask the business office for my $20 back? It's only $20 and the money isn't the issue, it just made me very angry and frustrated. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't go to my ob/gyn, it was my primary care physician. His last day is today (he's changing locations) so I think he has that "I don't care" attitude.

Yes, a blood test can detect the pregnancy hormone sooner. However, it takes the office longer to get the results back because they have to send the test out. Plus, it costs more. So, often doctors will preform the urine test in their office. That being said, your doctor was in the wrong and used horrible bedside manners. You and your insurance should not have to pay for services not received, however you probably won't win this case. Because the doctor's time was unable to be used for another patient. Sorry, your doctor was so inconsiderate. I hope you receive the good news your wishing for.

A blood test will show if you are pregnant or not 7 days following conception. HCG shows up sooner in your blood than it does your urine.
I would contact the insurance company and tell them they did not perform what they said they were going too.
I know at the health department they told me that their urine pregnancy test will show if you are pregnant or not 10 days after sex if you did get pregnant.
Go to the er and have a blood test done, atleast there you would know the results in less than 45 minutes.
If you do not chart or monitor your fertility in any way, and you think you may have conceived, you should wait 19 days (or longer) after having sex to test. Why 19?! Sperm can live approximately 5 days in the proper environment; if the sperm managed to live until you popped an egg, the actual conception could have taken place several days after the sex act that got the sperm there. To make sure you're not testing too early, assume the sperm had very long lives (5 days is considered a very long sperm life) and that conception occurred then. Then allow 14 days for the embryo to implant and develop enough hCG to show up on a pregnancy test (96% of pregnant women will test positive by then.)

I'm very sorry to hear that this happened to you... it must have been very upsetting. The doctor is there to provide a service for you - if he doesn't do what you ask, then you're within your rights to leave and refuse to pay. To answer your question, a blood test is definitely a more accurate affirmation and it does show up earlier in blood than urine. If you really want to know now, I'd suggest you go and ask another doctor for the test, or just wait a little while longer for the HPT.

i didn't even have to read your summery i just read your question and yes a blood test will tell you sooner. I decided that i might want to read everything just to give you some advice, i would find a new dr. if i were you! mine when i called they told me that if a urine test didn't come back positive they were going to do blood work. when i was pregnant the first time i was only a few days pregnant and the blood test pick up the hormone, only a few days later the hormone was gone, meaning i had a miscaraige. so yes i would definately say a blood test would pick up on it first. i would maybe contact your local Womens care Center and maybe talk to them and see what they say, maybe they will be able to help you out more! and give you more options! i hope this helps! Good Luck!

Blood tests can be accurate as early as 6-7 days after conception. Urine tests usually take longer to detect the pregnancy hormone because they are not as senesitive as blood tests. Most urine tests are accurate the first day of your missed period, some can test positive up to 5 days sooner. If you want to find out as soon as possible, I would try and get another blood test.

you're right~blood tests can tell you much sooner than the urine tests ..... and if you requested a blood test they should have given you one
anyways, I would go to a walk in clinic and request one...that way you will know for sure, and as far as your doctor the visit ~ unfortunately it will need to go ahead and be paid by your insurance or else they will hold you responsible for payment (I know it's not fair and it sucks, but that's how it is)
....good luck and congrats if you are....let us all know :)

my sister whom was pregnant done home preg test and a urine test at the dr. and both came back negative, although she was preg, so therefore a bloodtest was done. they are much more accurate...also i would request my money back qnd for my insurnce not to pay and i would file a complaint...it is a dr.'s job to help their patients not try to rush them or make a decision for them.
