In the US the best way would be to end all welfare programs for non disabled people. This will force them to get a job or further their education. If they lose their job provide some type of program in which they get assistance which in turn must be paid back at some later date. Lower the minimum wage so more jobs are available. Vote out Gov't officials who want to spend billions on junk science such as global warming. Encourage citizens to give privately to charities helping people in places such as Africa.

Nothing. People have to do for *themselves*. Waiting for someone else to support you is a surefire way to end up with nothing. Everyone has a choice and life isn't fair. Things come easier for some people and others have to work harder, that's just the way life works. Donate wherever you want, but I believe charity is better spent trying to eradicate disease than providing temporary help to some in the form of handouts.

The wrong thing to do is enable them to stay poor by just giving them everything they need without something in return. A big problem with todays liberal social programs.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish he eats for a lifetime. Don't just give them necessities like food and shelter. Teach them a skill and help them get jobs, so they can support themselves and their families from that day forward.

each of us just have to befriend one person who is more poor than ourselves.
care for and love him, show him that he is not being despised at, and teach him everything you've learnt in school (since he may not have the money for education) so that he can get his first job.

then, tell him to befriend another person who is poorer than he is.

I don't offer them any money because there are some people that pose as homeless just to make money. What I do is when I see one, I offer him/her to eat a meal with me. If they say no, they're a conman, if they say yes, they will be very thankful for the meal! ^.^
