Speech is analog. Computer is digital.

Modem stands for "Modulate Demodulate" - that's exactly what it does. It "modulates" a signal from your computer to the Internet, which converts it from digital to analog, and it "demodulates" signals from the Internet to your computer, converting from analog to digital.
