Lindsey, the Soviet Union, also known as USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republic,) is actually a federation of socialist republics wherein Russia is just a member state. It was made up of many republics such as Russia (the dominant state,) Lithuania, Estonia, Georgia, etc.. I'm sure that you sometimes hear these names in the news. These were countries that once made up the USSR. The USSR was largely controlled by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
The Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991, due to increasing desires by the member states to gain self-rule and sovereignty. It came at a time when the economic and political framework of the Union was crumbling. Many people see this as a fallout from the communist way of life and government.
Today, the USSR is no more, and has been replaced by a much loose confederation, namely, The Commonwealth of Independent States, which is not communist in nature as the USSR was. This Commonwealth currently consists of 12 of the former 15 states that made up the USSR. Russia is a member.

1917 began the comunist crackdown and power quest.
Until after WW II Russia was very much more powerful than the USA was. Germany killed millions of Russians and ruined much of their infrastructure during that war. The USA and Russia were alies at that time. It was the USA that supplied a tremendous amount of aid to Russia to help her fight the war and defeat the Germans. Russia then wanted to have control over all the defeated nations of europe and that is where the USA and the new USSR parted company and began the cold war. The USSR in the late 80s could no longer sustain the pace of military build up they were doing. In truth the USSR when they broke up was a tremendous power and could have devistated any part or all of the globe at any time. Thre still is a tremendous power there.
Many nations over the hundreds of years have wanted to be the world power and many have done so. Eventually they all have fallen and another nation has taken the title.
It will happen agaon.

It was called the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It went bankrupt trying to keep up with our military buildup during the 80s. After the USSR died, the breakaway nations came into their own. You hear about Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, etc. These are all names of countries that were under the USSR.
