After my daughter was born, I swelled so much i couldn't look myself in the mirror or put my new slippers on. I am thinking of not having epidural this time because I really want to be "all there" - maybe I won't swell up again?? it was horrible...

Because of it I was closely watched, but never got to know what caused it, so I thought It might be from the epidural. No, i did not have toxemia and I wasn't swollen during my previous pregnancy.Well, let's hope for the best and that it doesn't happen again. Just hope to be brave enough and stick to my resolution of not having epidural...

It definitely wasn't the epidural that made you swell.

Did you have an IV while you were in the hospital? If so, that can be the culprit... Because of the expected blood loss of child birth, they often give you lots of IV fluids which can make you swell. If I didn't have them hid in a box at the back of my closet, I'd show you my picture, LOL... my face was like a balloon and I couldn't wear shoes for two weeks after my daughter was born. It was horrible, I agree... however, just a part of childbirth. Take it in stride... no one is expected you to pose for the cover of Vogue right after you give birth and you can pick through the hospital pictures to see which ones make the album ;)

Good luck and best wishes!!!!

No, it was not the epidural.

You may have had some heart dysfunction after delivery, called peripartum cardiomyopathy. It is also possible to get symptoms of toxemia after delivery.

Tell your OB about this, and ask to be checked for heart problems, especially if you swell up again before the baby is born.

I had 3 kids without epidurals. Childbirth hurts. A lot. So don't feel bad if you decide to change your mind about the epidural.

No, probably not the epidural itself, but the fact that you are bed bound once you have one placed. Did you have toxemia with the first child? I was all swelled up after all 4 of my children and only had 2 epidurals.

I never swelled before I had my 1st child (while pregnant), but after I delivered I blew up. My feet were soo big. I didn't have an epi or any drugs. I think it's just the result of child birth in some people. My swelling went away after a few days, but it was not expected. I figured b/c I never swelled before having the baby I was out of the woods. WRONG! Good luck and keep your feet elevated. That helps.

My doc and all my nurses told me that swelling after delivery is very normal. All the extra fluids that your body has produced (not amniotic) just kind of re-distribute themselves. Anyway, that's what I was told, because I asked a similar question. Best of luck.

I really don't think it was the epidural.. I had one and it never happened to me, nor anyone else I was in the labour ward with.
