I plan on breast feeding my son, but I want to be on birth control as well, because we do not want to get pregnant after this one for 5 more years. I was wondering how I would go about being protected AFTER the baby is born, if I am breastfeeding.

At childbirth prep classes last Monday this topic was discussed. There is a pill that is safe for nursing mothers as well as the Depo-Provera shot. We were told that these can be given at the hospital before discharge so you can be protected immediately (for those who just can't wait). An IUD is an option but only after the 6 week check-up. There is also the old stand by, condoms. What ever you do, DO NOT rely on breastfeeding to be your only birth control. That is a very old wives' tale. I know, my daughters are 10 months apart. ;-)

you can use either a low dose pill or an iud (can be left in for 3-10 years depending on the type), Don't know about the new ring so i would ask on that. But the minute (ok week) you stop breast feeding if you are using the mini-pill you need to switch to a full dose pill.

Yes, my wife uses the IUD birth control device and breast fed our daughter for a little while.

I would recommend the Mirena IUD I am using it and love it. Here is a link and you can check out your options for yourself as far as birth control and breastfeeding.

If you're breastfeeding exclusively, it's most likely you won't get your period for at least six months. Your doctor should've explained that to you.
