First of all, you need to find out what type of RAM you got, and if you got any available slots, if not, you will have to remove your RAM and replace it with something larger in size.
To do this, you need to remove your tower chassis, and check this, the RAM are thin, yet wide chips, and can be easily removed by a slight tug.
Note that XP can't read more than 4gb of RAM, (it will only show 3), and Vista can't run more than 16gb of RAM.

From personal experience I would recommend that you go to
http://www.crucial.com/uk they will do an on line scan of your computer, tell you what size and speed of ram you need and recommend the best amount for your computer. You can order on line and will get fitting instructions with your order. It is not the cheapest but you are guaranteed that it will be compatible with your motherboard. You also get an excellent warranty, it's not worth cutting corners and buying cheap ram. Hope this helps.

This is a good website to buy RAM:
http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/kc.asp?bn=10232
Use the dropdown menus to find the make and model of your PC/laptop and buy the correct type.
For a laptop the memory card socket should be clearly marked on the bottom - just unscrew the panel and insert the chip.
For a desktop the memory card socket is on the motherboard.. look to the web for clear pictures.
