I have set up ALT Key Shortcuts in WORD 2003 for - Squared ; Cubed; and Pi.

But they do not work on this site when I try to help out with Mathematical Questions. Can anyone help, please - Thanx

Ensure that the 'Num-lock' is ON. Press and HOLD the 'ALT' key, then enter your code in the right hand group of keys on your keyboard. (Not the numbers on the main section)

Another useful tool is: -

Click on 'START' menu.
Select 'ALL PROGRAMMES'
Select 'ACCESSORIES'
Select 'SYSTEM TOOLS'
HIGHLIGHT & RIGHT CLICK ON 'CHARACTER MAP' AND SELECT "SEND TO" and Select 'PIN TO START MENU' .. (It then will always be available when needed by clicking on 'START). With it you can High-light the character you want, click on 'Select' then click 'Copy'.
You can then paste it into 'Answers'. (Many of the symbols displayed are given the 'ALT' code too.

(NOTE:..You can also access the calculator by the same method)

What I do is insert these characters into a blank Word document and then copy them over.

I generally use the equation editor to format equations in word, it provides all the characters you could need.

did u press numlock on your numberpad
and make sure u use the no .pad and not the nos. above the alphabet area
