See that your computer has least one antivirus, one antispyware, one firewall, and one temp files and registry cleaner on your pc. And scan your pc regularly. And run temp files cleaner after end of each browsing session. Apart from that create a limited user account on your pc and use it whenever you want to access internet.Use firefox browser for better protection. Create longer and strong passwords and change them frequently, at least once in a fortnight. Do not open email attachments in unsolicited mail or in the mail sent from the people you do not know. Learn the use of firewall to detect and block/unblock programs running on your computer. Firewalls like Comodo and zonealarm give you a online log of intrusion attempts being made to enter your computer. You can save those logs and use them to report to your ISP.

A person hacking into your somputer will not show up on your virus scanner or your spyware scanner. Hackers are not viruses or spyware. They will show up on your firewall. Check the event log for your firewall and it should list any attempts to hack into your computer.

if you need an advice from an old hacker yes
their is many methodes to made the virus and trojan undetectable form your antivirus or antispyware but you can be 80 % safe if you use a firewall like zoneAlarm with antivirus like kaspersky , i use kaspersky sciense 2000 and its great one really , just dont accept "exe,scr,com,pif, ..." and other excutable file formats from peolpe you dont know , if you do this its very hard for anyone to hack into your PC .

I agree with the dewcoons above answer, also normally a hacker will install a backdoor or trojan for another mode of access, incase the 1st security hole gets patched.
Hacker also modify trojans and backdoors so antivirus will not pick them up.

No it will not be shown in spyware or antivirus . You may install zonal alarm firewall , it is free and effective against such hackers.
