old or new has to be the beetle every time ive owned 6 classic beetles and my gf has a new beetle not one of them has broken down in the 15 years we've owned them, if it is the new beetle your after do avoid the 1400 and 1600 cc engined versions there well underpowered the only things i would recomend checking are air con if it has it and electric windows as they do tend to be problematic on vw's now other than that they will run for years without fail,

v*dub, you are very lucky to have had two beetles and no problems. beetles are pants along with most of the vw range. i work at a vw garage so i know what sort of rubbish comes in all the time.
i dont know much about the mini so cant really sya but i dont like the styling one bit.

Definitely the Volkswagen Beetle! I love Volkswagen's, you hear all this crap about then having electrical problems, and poor reliability.... I think that's crap. I had a 2001 VW Beetle, drove the hell out of it, put over 20k miles on it in just 8 months and it NEVER failed me. I never had a single problem with it! I now have a 2007 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible, and I couldn't be any happier! As along as I'm driving, I will continue to purchase Volkswagen's, and ONLY Volkswagen's. They are great cars! Very affordable and reliable!!
good luck with your decision!!

depends on your journeys, for longer trips at motorway speeds I would go for the beetle. 2007 mini is also a lot better than the older model.
Mini will keep its price better than the beetle and is cheaper to service if you buy the service deal when new
