Depends on the size of the star. If the size is large enough and it goes super nova today, then there will be a life extinction event on earth that would be worse then the killing of the dinosaurs. A small star will just simply black out.
Lucky for us there is no star that is 1 light year away. But if there was, it would take one year for light from that star to reach us, and the material from that stars explosion would travel at maybe 10% the speed of light, so that material would take much much longer.

No. Since it is a light year away, it would take the light emitted from it to travel 1 year before reaching Earth. And to see it, you need to see the light emitted from it. If it "burned out" tonight, you'll be able to see it 1 year later.

when we see stars go out it happened a while ago because space is so vast that it takes a while for the last bit of light to rach us then run out
