Catholics and most Protestants use the new Gregorian calendar decreed by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582.
The Greek Orthodox Church uses the old Julian calendar introduced in 46 BC by Julius Caesar.

Hi Ben, This is a great question. The Orthodox Church celebrates easter on a different day because they follow a different calendar than the western world. The Orthodox Church uses the Julian Calendar and we use the Gregorian Calendar. The main reason the date is different though is the fact that easter can not take place until after Passover if finished. This is mentioned in the New Testament. Passover starts on the 15 of Nisan and finish the 22 of Nisan on the Hebrew Calendar (for 2011 that is 19th-26th of April). The New Testament says that the romans would celebrate Easter after the Passover which is where the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church differ.

In the next 10 years, they will be the same date 5 times, the list below is for Greek Orthodox dates:
2007 - Easter Sunday - April 8th (same)
2008 - Easter Sunday - April 27th
2009 - Easter Sunday - April 19th
2010 - Easter Sunday - April 4th (same)
2011 - Easter Sunday - April 24th (same)
2012 - Easter Sunday - April 15th
2013 - Easter Sunday - May 5th
2014 - Easter Sunday - April 20th (same)
2015 - Easter Sunday - April 12th
2016 - Easter Sunday - May 1st
2017 - Easter Sunday - April 16th (same)
The article below explains it, but basically the Greek Orthodox uses the Gregorian calendar, and they just interpret things a little differently. Both are based on the cycles of the moon.

That actually depends on which Orthodox church you're talking about, Greek Orthodox or Russian Orthodox.
