I'm wondering what kinds of symptoms I would display if I have a condom allergy? Following sex with a condom vs sex without it (i am in a monogamous, long-term relationship so no lectures please) I almost always develop a UTI to some degree, I have pain and sometimes a burning feeling in my vagina, I sometimes experience painful intercourse. without a condom things are usually fine... I'm asking because sometimes it is necessary that we use condoms (ie-when I'm on my period) so i'd really like to know what I can do to cure the condom woes? WHat should i notice if i am allergic to condoms?

That does sound like a latex allergy. If you are allergic to latex, it will cause any part of your body it touches to get irritated - this would explain the burning, and the UTI may be a result of the inflamation. If your vagina and the skin around it is reacting then you are bound to have painful intercourse.

When you say "without a condom things are usually fine" what do you mean? If you get the same symptoms without using a condom then there may be another cause. If it happens only when you have sex and then calms down afterward then it may be an allergy to something else, like your lube.

Another possibility is if you only use a condom during your period it could be having sex then that is the problem. Sometimes, sex during your period could cause your cervix and vagina to react due to the increased level of hormones and the hormones in the blood. This could cause all of the symptoms you are experiencing.

There are several non-latex condoms on the market - both Durex & Mates do a version, and some companies specialise in these - ask your chemist. They should help if you have a latex allergy, and if not then you know it's something else.

Good luck!

I had this same problem. I actually didn't know I was allergic until I went to the doctor. Whenever I would have sex I would get raw and have burning which was always ALWAYS followed by urinary tract infection symptoms (burning when you pee, the urge to pee etc.) I also had a weird smell for a few hours after sex (and not the I just got some good kind of smell either :) ) When I finally went to the doctor she told me not only was I allergic to the spermicide but I was allergic to the latex. Get on the pill (Which is what I did since the only other option is non latex condoms and I just don't trust them) if you are in a relationship and STD's aren't a concern. If not, talk to your OBGYN.

Hope this helps

Why do you need to use a condom when you are on your period? The most fertile time is about 14 days after that.
It could be that you have a latex allergy. If you have a reaction to bandaids or medical tape that has latex, this would confirm the suspicion.
The ultimate treatment for this problem is abstinence and you know about that.
Sheepskin and latex free condoms are available at a slightly higher cost.

Try using either lambskin or polyurethane condoms. Neither of these are latex, and if you don't have any of the symptoms you described after use, you have discovered your problem. If the symptoms still persist even with a non-latex condom you may want to see your doctor.

I have that problem with the condoms with spermicide. They make me itchy...also I was having the same UTI problem too. I think they call it honeymoon something or other. Try condoms without any spermicide and see if that helps. Also, I think if you're partner goes too deep that can cause UTI and pain troubles.

Seems like you are allergic to the condom or to the spermicide.

Sometimes, certain girls get a UTI from sex, if their partner hasn't been scrupulously clean with an anti bacterial soap.

See your OB/GYN.
