I've found that the best bond for friendships is to put that friend's interests before your own. Think about what you can put into the friendship instead of what you can get out of it. Be willing to laugh with abandonment, weep with empathetic sorrow, and learn to listen when you feel like "fixing" all the problems that are told to you.

TO MAINTAIN IT ALL YOU NEED TO HAVE IS PATIENCE. TIME CEMENTS A FRIENDSHIP WITH THE INTERESTS OF THE FRIENDS INVOLVED AND FROM YOUR SIDE YOU SHOULD BE HELPING, CARING AND AT THE SAME TIME A PERSON WHO CAN STOP HER/HIS FRIEND FROM DOING SOMETHING WRONG OR FROM BEING IN BAD COMPANY.
IF THE CHOICE WASN'T A GOOD ONE U WILL COME TO KNOW. BE YOURSELF,TRUTHFUL AND MAINTAIN SELF-RESPECT.

In my opinion if u want to make new freinds u should have to interact with them,by knowing them means knowing their likes and dislikes. after this u see the co-ordination between u &him/her is increasing. but the most important thing is to fulfill the obligations which u are doing to him/her on ur part.
