I currently have a PCI based PC with a directional antenna as the reception is not perfect. I am upgrading my PC to a vista one that does not support the old card so I am considering using a USB wifi and use a 1m cable extension to position it in a good spot.

Is there a disadvantage of using a USB wifi card rather than PCI based one in an 802.11g network.

Thank you

PCI advantages: Sits in your computer, not on the outside. Nicely out of sight.
Disadvantages: You can't easily take it out and use it in onther computers.

USB: advantages: Easier to readjust. Easier to use in other computers (like a laptop, or a friends computer).
Disadvantages: It sticks out.

Well its not really any disadvantage but you wont be able to use the USB wifi with an external antenna. If you really need extra range or more signal you may want to consider a wireless bridge with an external antenna connection.

The bridge will connect to your eithernet port. You have to set up the bridge to connect to the system but once connected they tend to stay that way and have less issues with signal levels. There are high powered ones available if you need more range etc.
