Size of the pelvis. ALL vertibrate animals come through the pelvis in some form or another. The limiting factor of the animal's size and quantity is how big the opening is.

The size of the birth canal--too small and the infant's head or shoulders could become wedged and both mother and child will die. That's why back in the 'old days' women with narrow hips usually died in childbirth--the baby simply wouldn't fit.
