Since I began having periods, at age 13, I have only had 3-4 a year (if I'm lucky). Finally, a little over 2 months ago my doctor put me on metformin and told me I had PCOS. It has been a total of 8 months since I had my last period, so I wanted to know if taking metformin will help increase the chances of my having a period. (I'm taking 1000mg twice a day)

metformin helps to correct the underlying hormonal imbalance that exists in PCOS (which is caused by insulin resistance and insulin like hormones that act on both fat cells and ovarian cells)

so on one hand : yes - by improving the condition generally it is more likely that you will ovulate and once you have ovulated you will bleed 2 weeks later.

but on the other there is no guarantee that metformin will induce a bleed.

if you "want" a bleed, or your doctor thinks you should have a bleed induced every few months to prevent hypertrophy of the womb lining (which he probably wont if you are in your teens / twenties) using progesterone to initiate a withdrawal bleed is more reliable.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking metformin?

Some people develop a life-threatening condition called lactic acidosis while taking metformin. You may be more likely to develop lactic acidosis if you have liver or kidney disease, congestive heart failure, a severe infection, if you are dehydrated, or if you drink large amounts of alcohol. Talk with your doctor about your individual risk.
You should not use this medication if you are allergic to metformin, or if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis (call your doctor for treatment with insulin).
If you need to have any type of x-ray or CT scan using a dye that is injected into your veins, you will need to temporarily stop taking metformin.
To make sure you can safely take metformin, tell your doctor if you have any of these other conditions:
- liver disease; or
- a history of heart disease.
FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
It is not known whether metformin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using metformin.
Metformin should not be given to a child younger than 10 years old. Extended-release metformin (Glucophage XR) should not be given to a child younger than 17 years old.

MMMM?? Not to my knowledge. I take Metformin for
Diabetes 2, to help regulate my sugars. The only thing
I can think of is that with sugar level regulation I've lost
about 15lbs, I'm quite overweight partly why I'm diabetic,
and since I've lost the weight I've had a more regular period.
It seems with me there is about a 10lb window, over no period, under period. So I'd say unless you are very heavy, and loose some, then I can't see why Metformin would work that way. But hey medical science is Weird!

while you're no longer getting your era frequently on Metformin then it skill you're nevertheless no longer ovulating. till now Metfomin i grow to be getting my era approximately each and every 3 months and not ovulating in any respect. I have been given a era interior some weeks after pointing out it. i did no longer ovulate that cycle, yet I even have one and all for the reason that, and have been having my era each and each month. i could say supply it yet another month and then pass back on your wellbeing care expert, you need to choose on an more advantageous dose. you would be able to additionally opt to look at Clomid. I even have PCOS such as you, or maybe inspite of the indisputable fact that i grow to be ovulating on the Metformin on my own my luteal section grow to be too short, so I only all started Clomid to alter that.
