Black History Month is celebrated in February here in America because, back in the 1920's, a historian named Carter G. Woodson came up with Negro History Week. He placed in in the week between Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday.
Both of those birthdays happen to be in February. He picked those two holidays because Washington was the father of our country and Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves, during the Civil War.
Later on, it was expanded out to a whole month, but they kept in in February.
I don't know why England's Black History Month is in October. Maybe the annaversary of when they ended slavery in the British colonies is in October or something like that.

In America we celebrate (kinda we do TV specials that that's about it) it in February. The reason why though I can't really explain. It might have to do with the way holidays are arranged in our separate countries or dates may be different. Such as... freedom of slavery in such. Or.. it could just be completely incidental and there is no true reason. What I wonder is why don't we celebrate it during January in which Martin Luther King Juniors birthday takes place. It's seems pretty strange to appreciate African Americans one day then wait half a month to do it again.

It's actually Feb. in America. But like a lot of things, it gets pushed aside. Who knows what March is the month of other than the Ides of March is a particularly good day to be assassinated.

Im just glad Britain finally have a black history month as they have not always had it..also why do people on here have to moan about not having a white history month?? When I grew up I only knew about black history from what I learnt myself and what my parents told me. All I learnt in school was a bit on slavery and Martin Luther King. There is so much much more to black history and if everyone was taught it there may not be such a racial divide!

Its celebrated in February in America, and no, it's not because of Martin Luther King's birthday,Martin Luther King's birthday is in January.Actually, I think it's because of Abraham Lincoln's birthday which is Febrary 12. we had black history month before Martin Luther King Jr.

I have no clue. Perhaps someone could answer this. If the white ppl had a "white" history month it would be racist, If there was a White entertainment TV station..it would be racist...Why does a white person that worked 17 hard yrs get denied for disability when they have a legit reason. If I was black I would get it. Think how good you people have it before ya go complaining about black history month being celebrated twice in a year.

It's not. In America it's on February. Ask most Americans why and they will tell you it's because Feb. is the shortest month, but the real reason is to commemorate Martin Luther Kings birthday. (He also has a national holiday in Feb.) As to England? No clue.

It's celebrated in Feburary in America. Some suggest this is because Feburary is the shortest month of the year. However, Feburary is one of the longest school month of the year, because classes are not canceled for any holidays during Feburary in America.

well in Britain things tend to take a lot of preperation from lighting the London skyline with fireworks to the king of England marching into hackney and embracing all the black gang members
then of course handing over wales for a huge street party for the people of Nottingham,Leicester,London takes a lot of planning,

It's arbitrary, and depends on what other months are "taken".
In America, it's February, as others have pointed out. No, it doesn't have to do with being the "shortest" month or any stuff like that.
