Lavender, like many bushes, blooms on old wood. As the above poster says, trim it after the main bloom flush is over. You can probably get away with doing it well into the summer, but no later than that. It needs the latter part of summer and fall to let the new growth mature for the next year's bloom.

Lavender should be pruned or trimmed in the summer, or after it blooms. Pruning prior to blooming will kill a lot of the blooms. Take care to leave some greenery(leaves) or it might not survive.

Prune only after it blooms for this season. Dont prune too harshly.
