If your computers are networked, you can move files into a shared folder, and move them between the two pc's.
Or you could use a cool little program from microsoft that can synchronize files and folders between two pc's....

Can use a Paralllel Cable, or One of the Cross Over cables which I think is Better when doing PC to PC transfers.
If you have a Network ( Small or Whatever): have them both on the Network, Share the Root of the Desktop PC, and Transfer the Lot to the Laptop.
If you have the Cash, you can also have a "container"( At COMPUSA ,the unit I am trying to recall holds Hard Drives as if it was an external drive) for your PC's Hard drive, and just Plug it in to the Laptop... the stuff transfers straight over

Most application software cannot be copied and needs reinstalling on the laptop (but you can try). Years ago we would use floppy disks but now it would be a USB memory stick or CD (if PC has a writer). Next would be a network LAN (crossover cable). Spending more money, it would be a broadband wireless router with LAN connections from PC plus LAN and/or wireless from the laptop.

Your best bet is to connect the two machines via a USB transfer cable or a network crossover cable. You will have to configure the IP addresses on both machines. Then use the file and settings transfer wizard from microsoft. It can be found at the following location http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/mgrtfset.mspx. This will walk you through step by step.

If you have loads of photos, upload them on an online album like Flickr and you access them on your laptop by connecting to the internet.
If you have other documents and files, you can save them in a thumb drive or an external hard disk!

You got several options, you can use a product like Norton Save & Restore or GHOST to image your hard-drive, or you can copy your files and folders onto an external hard-drive, then copy them back again.
Both processes shouldn't take more than a few hours.

You can use an ethernet cable or copy your stuff onto cd or copy it onto a flash drive and transfer the info that way.
